NEW YORK — The Eden Rose, a 10.20-carat fancy intense pink diamond, sold for $13.3 million, or $1.3 million per carat, at a Christie’s jewelry auction on Tuesday, exceeding its pre-sale estimate of $9 million to $12 million.
Named after the symbol of unconditional love, the 'Rose of Eden' is an internally flawless round brilliant cut diamond, an unusual cut for a natural coloured diamond, according to Christie's.
The diamond is mounted in an 18k white gold ring with an 18k rose gold brooch and is surrounded by a halo of pear-shaped brilliant-cut and marquise-cut diamonds weighing between 0.73 and 3.11 carats.
Tuesday's "Magnificent Jewels" sale at Christie's marks the first time the "Rose of Eden" has been offered at auction.
Christie's said the diamond is the most important round brilliant Fancy Intense pink diamond to come to auction in more than a decade.
