There will be two full moons in August this year, on the 2nd and 31st respectively. These two full moons are short-distance full moons commonly known as "super moons", which are about 27,000 kilometers closer than normal full moons.

Blessed are astronomy fans! In August, there will be a series of wonderful astronomical events visible to the naked eye, including the once-in-ten-year "Super Blue Moon", the Perseid meteor shower with the best viewing conditions over the years, the annual Saturn opposition, and the eastward distance of Mercury, etc. Don't miss it!

There will be two full moons in August this year, on the 2nd and 31st respectively. These two full moons are short-distance full moons commonly known as "super moons", which are about 27,000 kilometers closer than normal full moons. The second full moon that occurs in the same month is called a "blue moon", which occurs only once every 2 to 3 years on average, while the "super blue moon" in which a super moon and a blue moon occur at the same time is quite rare, from 1951 to 2050 There are only 4 times in the past century, in 1996, 2010, 2023 and 2029.

Another astronomical phenomenon that is expected is the maximum period of the Perseid meteor shower on the night of August 13. The number of zenith meteors per hour (ZHR) is expected to reach 100, and the moon phase is close to the new moon, and the moonlight has little effect on meteor viewing. It is the best viewing condition in recent years, and it is expected that there will be another romantic feast with shooting stars all over the sky.

In terms of planetary dynamics, on August 10, Mercury's "greatest distance from the east" to the sun will occur on August 10, and it will be visible at low altitudes in the west after sunset.

August 27th is the annual Saturn opposition, which is the best time to watch this planet with beautiful rings. The brightness of Saturn reaches magnitude 0.4. The Taipei Planetarium will also open the telescope from 19 to 21:00 on the weekend of the week. Appreciate Saturn.
