Artificial intelligence can steal your passwords by listening to your keystrokes, researchers have found. When they tested it with a smartphone placed near the keyboard of a MacBook Pro, they found that the artificial intelligence could not only perceive the sound, but also detect the waveform, intensity and timing of each keystroke, as well as recognize the unique style of each user's typing.

In addition, researchers at Durham University, the University of Surrey and the University of London say that on smartphones, AI close to video conferencing apps such as Zoom and other off-the-shelf apps can also listen in as people log into their accounts and websites.

In video conferencing, however, the AI was less accurate at detecting passwords, at 93 percent.

The risk of such artificial intelligence is more common than people realize, the researchers say, noting that "there are more microphones in the acoustic range of the keyboard than ever before, and will likely continue to increase in the future."

According to the Metro report, one way to prevent artificial intelligence from stealing important passwords is to use password management software, such as Windows Hello or Touch ID. These software can generate, store and embed strong passwords.

The software can not only automatically process passwords, so that you don't need to remember all passwords, but also saves the step of entering passwords, avoiding the risk of malicious artificial intelligence eavesdroppers stealing passwords on your mobile phone or other devices.

Another method is to keep audio and microphone devices away from the computer or laptop that is logged into the account.

The researchers left unanswered the following question: What if AI malware somehow got onto a computer or laptop, instead of just placing a smartphone next to it and stealing it?
