President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday night that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a new efficiency division with the goal of dismantling government bureaucracy and "cutting wasteful spending" across federal agencies by July 4, 2026.
Trump said their efforts to run the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) "will likely become the 'Manhattan Project' of our time."
"Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle the government bureaucracy, cut redundant regulations, reduce wasteful spending, and reorganize federal agencies - all critical to the 'Save America' movement," Trump said in a statement Tuesday night.
Musk, the world's No. 1, said at a pre-election rally at Madison Square Garden that he could cut $2 trillion from the $7 trillion federal budget.
“To drive this sea change, the Department of Government Effectiveness will provide advice and guidance from outside government and work with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to advance massive structural changes that will create an unprecedented, entrepreneurial approach to government,” Trump wrote in the statement.
Indian-American former presidential candidate Ramaswamy has said he will not seek a position in the Trump administration as he is considering succeeding Vice President-elect JD Vance as Ohio senator or running for Ohio governor in 2026.
"Their work will be done by July 4, 2026 at the latest, streamlining the U.S. government to make it a smaller, more efficient, less bureaucratic government," Trump said. "July 4, 2026, will be the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and it will be the perfect gift to America."
