[New Sancai Released] "The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne" (The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne) is an unfinished oil painting created by the High Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). It was created between 1508 and 1510 and is now in the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.
The painting depicts the Virgin Mary sitting on the lap of her mother, Saint Anne, and the baby Jesus trying to ride on a sacrificial lamb. This painting was commissioned as an altarpiece for the Church of Santissima Annunziata in Florence.
The composition of the three figures in the picture is quite compact, and the interaction between the Virgin Mary and the Child is obvious. Maria
The faces of St. Anne and her daughter did not show much age difference. As for Maria sitting on Saint Anne's lap, it is unclear what Leonardo intended this gesture to convey. There is no precedent for this kind of sitting on a woman's lap in other works of art.
