[New Sancai Compilation and First Release] Dora Chen invites us to explore the intersection of Eastern and Western brushstrokes, so that we can feel the aesthetic feeling echoed in the blending of cultures. "Painting has been my hobby since childhood, and my parents have always supported me." Dora recalled. This remarkable artist embarked on a journey from China to Taiwan and finally to the United States. Dora, who has a professional background in literature and libraries, has never lost her love for painting throughout her life. She pursued many art classes at every opportunity to hone her skills in artistic expression in the East and West.
"In the 1980s, while working at Rutgers University, I had the honor to learn Chinese painting from a famous artist who came to New Jersey from New York. I followed her guidance for 6 years and laid a solid foundation for my journey of Chinese ink painting ’” Dora reflects on the key experiences that shaped her artistic path.
After moving to Singapore from New Jersey for a while, Dora continued to immerse herself in the art of Chinese painting. However, after settling in San Diego, California, she found a sense of belonging and a platform to showcase her art. "I feel very lucky and fulfilled to have this hobby. Life is never boring, as long as I have time, I will paint." Dora said gratefully that she found a promotional art community in the Southwest Artists Association, which The Society is located in the Spanish Village Arts Center in the picturesque Balbo Park.
Dora's artwork harmoniously blends Eastern and Western elements. "My art combines the serenity of traditional Chinese ink painting with the free spirit of contemporary Western art. It embodies a modern version of fusion," she explains, emphasizing the unique and refreshing approach she has developed through years of practice and exploration. style. Her paintings have attracted many audiences in various exhibitions and are collected by art lovers all over the world.
When asked how to plan for retirement, Dora confidently replied: "Painting has become my main pastime. Whenever I ask myself: 'What should I do now?' I go to paint." Painting is her A source of outlet and fulfillment in the scenic San Diego setting, she enjoys hiking and walking with her husband.
Reflecting on the differences between when she was young and now, Dora admits that she has received diverse artistic training. She notes: "When I was young, I mainly studied Western art, starting with sketches and then using colors." However, she met a talented teacher of Chinese painting, which sparked her fascination with the poetic and abstract nature of Chinese painting. “Because painting is very poetic to me in a way. It’s like a different world,” Dora describes, emphasizing that this ethereal quality of art form fascinates her deeply.
Dora's journey in Chinese painting enabled her to create a unique style that combines Eastern and Western artistic elements. "Chinese painting doesn't talk about perspective, light and shade. That's what I mean in a more poetic way. In Western art, the first lesson is perspective and shadow," she explained. While the paint she employs may lean towards Western techniques such as watercolor and acrylic (acrylic paint), Dora's method retains the essence of Chinese painting. "Even if I use acrylic, it's more like a Chinese painting style to me," she said bluntly.
Interestingly, Dora's artistic process goes beyond traditional methods. "I prefer a free-flowing approach. I don't draw sketches first, I look at the paper first, decide where the flowers should be placed, and then start drawing." She revealed. Her intuition and emphasis on composition are key factors in her captivating paintings. “Composition is really important in making a good painting, but it’s hard to learn. I see, I feel, should it be closer? Bigger or smaller? That’s composition,” she explained, emphasizing The importance of composition in the artistic process.
Drawing on a variety of artistic influences and receiving extensive training, Dora's style has evolved into a uniquely personal expression. "I learned a lot of Western and Chinese painting lessons, digested them, and then formed my own style." She said proudly. Her art now reflects her unique perspective and creative intuition.
Dora continues to paint and inspire others with her artistic endeavors, and she still believes art should bring joy and beauty to the lives of collectors. By blending Eastern and Western influences, she bridges cultures and celebrates the power of artistic expression as a universal language.
